Sisteme de tratare au fost instalate in vederea decontaminarii acestei ape, dar sunt considerate cu mult insuficiente.
TEPCO prevede sa le consolideze si sa construiasca alte cisterne, pentru a se ajunge la o capacitate de stocare de 800.000 de metri cubi, pana in 2016.
Unii experti, inclusiv de la Agentia Internationala pentru Energie Atomica (AIEA), recomanda sa se studieze posibilitatea deversarii in mare a apei care a fost curatata de esentialul radionucleidelor, in pofida faptului ca este cunoscut faptul ca in aceasta va ramane tritiu, care nu poate fi extras, pentru moment.
